Tips for a more successful storytime:
- Be excited about the story. The kids will feel that energy and learn to love reading books and/or learning the stories just as much as you do! Use different voice inflections, pause when needed, and show emotion throughout the story.
- Mix it up. Storytime doesn't always have to be just reading the book. Occasionally add props, visual aids, kids activities, worksheets, crafts, etc. for kids that want to learn more and dive deeper into the story.
- Make storytime comfortable. Choose a comfortable spot or make a special reading nook and storytime spot for kids to go (it can be a reading rug, special chair, the couch, etc).
- Know the book and/or story. If you know the story you're reading or retelling, you can help kids better understand the plot, characters, setting, themes.
- Ask questions and talk about it. Help kids get into the story by asking questions before, during, after. You might show them the cover (or props) and ask if they can speculate what the story is about. As you're reading ask questions that help gauge their understanding. At the end help them summarize and talk about what they learned, the themes, characters, etc.
